We hear this one a lot: “I’m just not quite ready yet.”
And we always nod, because we mean it when we say there’s no rush. But sometimes we think what people actually mean is: I’m not sure I’ll ever feel ready, and I’m not sure that feeling will change.
Here’s something we’ve noticed over years of working with seniors and families in Southern Alberta. The people who feel ready to sell their home before they actually do it are actually pretty rare. Readiness — true, total, no-reservations readiness — is not really how humans work when it comes to decisions this significant.
What actually happens more often is this: people arrive at a point where the reasons to move have quietly outgrown the reasons to stay. Where the home that was once a source of comfort and pride has started to feel a little more like an obligation. Where the thought of a simpler, easier life is starting to sound genuinely appealing — not just logically sensible, but actually appealing.
That’s not the same as ready. But it might be better.
Because when that shift happens, people who act on it — who start the conversation, get the home evaluated, begin thinking through a plan — almost universally tell us afterward that they’re glad they didn’t wait longer. That the anticipation was harder than the process. That they wish they’d started sooner.
You don’t need to feel ready to start. You just need to be curious enough to have a conversation.
We’re good at those.
