The One-Year Plan: Why the Best Moves Start Earlier Than You Think

The One-Year Plan: Why the Best Moves Start Earlier Than You Think

If you’ve been reading our blog for a while, you know we’re not big on pressure. But there’s one thing we do feel strongly about, and it’s this: the families who give themselves a full year to plan a move almost always have a better experience than those who give themselves a month.

Not because moving is complicated — though it is. But because life is complicated, and a year gives you room to work with it rather than against it.

Here’s what a thoughtful one-year plan actually looks like for most of the families we work with in Cardston, Lethbridge, Magrath, and Raymond.

Months 1–3: Information gathering. What is the home worth today? What are comparable properties selling for? What communities or housing types might make sense for this next chapter? No decisions yet — just getting the lay of the land.

Months 4–6: Sorting and simplifying. This is the gradual, room-by-room process of deciding what comes with you, what goes to family, what gets donated or sold. Doing this without a hard deadline is a gift to yourself.

Months 7–9: Light preparation of the home. Small repairs, a fresh coat of paint in the right places, a bit of staging guidance. Nothing dramatic — just thoughtful.

Months 10–12: Listing and selling. By this point, you’re ready. The home looks its best, you know where you’re going, and the process feels like a conclusion rather than a scramble.

This is, of course, a general outline. Every family’s situation is different, and we adjust to yours. But the underlying principle holds: time is one of the greatest resources you have in this process, and it costs nothing to start using it early.

If you’re somewhere in that first quiet stage — thinking about it but not ready to act — that’s exactly the right time to give us a call. We’ll meet you right there.
