It comes up more than almost any other reason people give for considering a move: the grandchildren are in Lethbridge, or Calgary, or Red Deer, and the drive is getting longer every year.
Proximity to family is one of the most powerful motivators for a downsizing move — and also, sometimes, one of the most complicated to act on. Because it’s not just a real estate decision. It’s a family decision. And family decisions have layers.
A few things worth thinking through before you make the leap.
Have the honest conversation with your family first. It sounds obvious, but it doesn’t always happen. Before you start looking at listings in a new city, make sure everyone is on the same page about expectations. How often will you actually see each other? What does “closer” mean in practical terms? The conversation is worth having before the move, not after.
Consider proximity without full relocation. Sometimes moving to the same city isn’t necessary — or right. A move that cuts a two-and-a-half-hour drive down to forty minutes might give you everything you’re actually looking for, while keeping you in a community and a network you already know and love.
Think about what you’re moving toward and what you’re leaving. The community you’ve built over decades — your church, your friends, your familiar routines — has real value. Moving closer to family sometimes means leaving that behind. It’s not a reason not to go. But it’s worth naming honestly.
Get the real estate picture in both places. What will your current home sell for? What can that buy you in the new location? Understanding the financial picture clearly — before emotions take over — makes for a much better decision.
We’ve helped families think through exactly these kinds of moves. It’s nuanced work and we love it. If this is where your head is at, let’s talk it through.
